The Serra da Lousã is a special location for observing deer in their natural habitat. It is common to see examples of this species amongst the vegetation of the Serra nearly all year round.

However, deer rutting, which takes place from September to November, during the mating season, is a unique and unforgettable spectacle and one of the high points of nature’s calendar in the Aldeias do Xisto.

During this period you can hear the males claiming and defending, attracting the females. Because they must make themselves visible to the opposite sex, the animals are more exposed, and so more likely to be spotted.

Dusk and dawn are the most favourable times of day for these sightings. In addition to direct observation, you can also use binoculars to watch animals from a distance and view the details and behaviours of specific individuals.
