The months of September to November are the ideal time to observe these beautiful wild animals during their mating season.
During the mating season, the largest mammal of the Serra da Lousã, the Deer(cervus elaphus), make themselves seen more readily.
They are easier to find in this season because its their mating period, also called the rutting season. The males stand out for their loud roars to attract females and drive away other competing males.
At this time of year, the deer that are in the middle of the rutting season seek to court females and defend them from other males which are easily detected by their loud grunts.
You can also use binoculars to observe animals further away or to see details and behaviours of certain individuals.
This is an amazing and unique spectacle!
