Korean Buncheong Ceramics Course

Cerdeira

Buncheong ceramics is a Korean aesthetic expression that emerged between the 14th and 16th centuries and, due to its boldness, visual dynamism and contemporary language, continues to profoundly influence contemporary ceramics in the Western world. This course offers a practical and cultural immersion in this tradition, giving participants the opportunity to learn ancestral techniques from one of its leading contemporary practitioners.

Led by artist Hajeong Lee Rogers, this nine-day programme invites participants to explore the history and beauty of this Korean tradition, while developing technical and creative skills. Throughout the course, seven traditional Buncheong decoration techniques will be explored, including inlay, sgraffito, printing, engobe application and expressive brushstrokes, among others.

Participants will create pieces both on the potter's wheel and using manual techniques, experiencing the entire creative process: from modelling to glazing and wood firing in the Sasukenei, the Japanese-designed smokeless kiln at Cerdeira. Each participant will thus be able to fully experience the ceramics cycle and take home unique pieces, solid technical knowledge and a deeper understanding of this living tradition.

About the trainer

Born in Seoul, Hajeong Lee Rogers studied crafts at Sungshin Women’s University, where she found her main artistic territory in ceramics. She completed her bachelor’s degree in 2001 and her master’s degree in 2003, remaining as an assistant and later as a teacher. Her career has been recognised with several awards, including the National Award for Craft Art (2005). Since 2011, she has lived in rural Wales, where she develops artistic and educational work, focusing mainly on utilitarian ceramics inspired by the Buncheong tradition. In 2021, she was elected a member of the Craft Potters Association (United Kingdom) and her work is included in several national and international public collections.
