The Schist Village of Sobral de São Miguel, in the municipality of Covilhã, once again celebrates the Easter season with traditions deeply rooted in the local identity.
The celebrations begin on 2 April with the iconic procession of the Penitents. At midnight, through the streets of the parish, a group of men and boys, wrapped in white sheets, make their way through the village in an intense and striking ritual. This display, both impressive and symbolic, keeps alive an ancestral tradition that continues to inspire emotion and respect among residents and visitors alike.
On 4 April, the eagerly awaited Gastronomic Easter takes place in the building of the former Primary School. The event brings together local associations and businesses, who compete in the preparation of traditional soups. From 4.00 pm, a musical performance kicks off the programme, followed at 6.00 pm by the tasting of the soups entered in the competition. At 8 pm, prizes will be awarded to the best entries.
In addition to the soups, there will also be an opportunity to sample various typical Sobral specialities, such as codfish with onions, caldudo, traditional filhoses and rice pudding made with goat’s milk – a true invitation to experience the flavours of the region.
Celebrate Easter in Sobral de São Miguel and immerse yourself in the unique traditions, sounds and flavours of this schist village. Plan your entire stay at bookinxisto.com.
