Johannes Krieger's Chibanga Groove is like a smaller version of the Tora Tora Big Band, with the particularity that this transnational formation created in Lisbon emphasises African influences - both Maghrebian and da negra, more to the south - in a jazz style that is intended to be festive, very physical and with more space for improvisation. Besides the German trumpeter, composer and arranger involved in several Portuguese orchestras, we find musicians such as Dan Hewson, Francesco Valente and João Rijo, all of them an important part of the national scene, despite their different origins.
The special guest in this version of the group is a kora player linked to the Mandinka tradition and who we can hear play with Swiss born Taffetas and May Coope. The Guinean Ibrahima Galissa is used to linking griot with jazz and this is repeated once again in this project that intends to give its folk and African nature back to the genre of music originating in the United States, in a multicultural formula that embraces both the historical conventions and the progressive factors of the contemporary.
All this according to the particular vision of Krieger, a musician who has stood out in contexts as diverse as the projects he has shared with Nuno Rebelo, Alípio C. Neto, Ricardo A. Freitas, Tito Paris, Amélia Muge and Yuri Daniel and who has greatly contributed to raising the quality of our "bigbandism" to the level it is today.
