The pieces of the collection Pernas para que te quero - A revolta dos legumes, by Casa da Olaria, developed for the project Agricultura Lusitana, with which the Aldeias do XIsto represented Portugal at EUNIQUE 2015, in May last year, in Karlsruhe, Germany, were selected for the exhibition Burilada | arte-factos para a sobrevivência, on the opening of the Casa do Design, in Matosinhos.
The exhibition BURILADA | arte-factos para a sobrevivência, curated by Francisco Providência, designer and researcher, and Helena Sofia Silva, lecturer at ESAD- Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Matosinhos (one of the nine design schools that participated in the project Agricultura Lusitana), collects, groups and organizes a set of Portuguese artefacts of design and contemporary production, which contribute to the preservation and dissemination of cultural identities, to the retrieval of technical knowledge and to the promotion of the use of local materials and production, constituting a strategy of social, economic and ecological sustainability.
Pieces that also promote the re-equation of use values, of new ways of being functional, of new ways of utilizing techniques and materials. An example is the case of the lã pisoada de Bucos (Cabeceiras de Basto), reimagined as contemporary pieces under the guidance of Helena Cardoso, contributing to the fixation of the population and generational renewal. Or the filigree metal work of Póvoa de Lanhoso, the burel traditional textiles of Manteigas, the cork, the embroidery of Minho or the potery of S. Pedro do Corval, cases in which the far-seeing eye of the designer found the ancestral knowledge of the craftsmen and proposed alternatives Sophisticated tools, from rapid prototyping to online sales, make it possible to validate the scale of small production, making it possible to reduce production costs and dispense with the middlemen and burdens of large infrastructures. These new pieces manifest knowledge investigated by ESAD IDEA and ID+ for the material and cultural survival of these regions.
In a partnership between the Municipality of Matosinhos and ESAD IDEA Design Research, the opening of the Casa do Design is one of the proposals of the announced candidacy process of Matosinhos to the Network of Creative Cities of UNESCO, recently presented within the scope of the Milan Triennial.
